Our History

We began in the time of inkwells. In a time when our community was suffering from the "Great Depression." It was the time when a group of Parker Pen employees recognized the need to control their own financial destiny...a time when we became the Vacumatic Credit Union...the time was 1934!)

The credit union was founded and grew based on the philosophy of providing personalized service and meeting members financial needs. The entire credit union was operated out of a tin box in the nurse's office. As she made her rounds, she collected deposits from the members. Through the aftermath of the Depression and the war years, the credit union continued to pay dividends and offer low cost loans to the members.

Over 70 years, our history is one of growth and expansion.

In 1977 the credit union opened its membership to employee groups other than Parker Pen employees. This new idea became so popular that soon the credit union was serving twelve other employer groups, including Mercy Hospital employees.

In 1982 the credit union officially opened its membership to anyone living or working in the City of Janesville and thus became the PARKER COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION - PCCU

In 1987, the charter was once again expanded to include anyone living or working in Rock County.

The rich tradition of the basic credit union philosophy of "People Helping People" has sustained us through times of depression, recessions, prosperity and adversities. Our mission was very simple then and remains simply focused today: To provide personalized, family-oriented service designed for the financial benefit of all members.

When you join PCCU you can expect a commitment to your financial well being. This is a commitment members have counted on then, depend on now, and on which you can rely on long into the future.

Who Is Eligible To Join?

Persons residing or employed in Rock County, Wisconsin, and "immediate family members" of a person eligible for membership. "Members of the immediate family" includes, but is not limited to, the spouse, parents, stepchildren and children of each person eligible to be a member of the credit union, whether or not residing in the same household. The term also includes any other relative of any person eligible, or of the spouse of the eligible person, if the relative resides in the same household as the person.

All you have to do is fill out a simple application and deposit $5.00 into a "share" account (savings) which then becomes your "share" of the credit union. Subject to the policies of the credit union, once you become a member and keep your savings account open, you can take advantage of all the services the credit union has to offer.

Out of the research and development of the late 1920's came Parker's revolutionary pen -- the Vacumatic, which featured an improved sacless filling mechanism. The pen was made from a unique laminated plastic with alternating layers of black and silver pearl, resulting in a striking series of stripes running around the pen and it was the first appearance of the smart Arrow-style clip, which would become Parker's single most identifiable trademark. The success of the pen was immediate.

Although the fountain pen industry struggled during the Depression, with the start of World War II, it thrived once again and business mushroomed during the 1940's. At the end of the war, it was with Parker pens that the agreement surrendering the German and Italian forces in Northwest Italy were signed.

The Armistice ending World War II on the European Front was signed with Parker 51 pens belonging to General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Though he knew he couldn't attend the signing, Eisenhower insisted his pens be sent for the event. And it was with his own 20-year Duofold that General Douglas MacArthur signed the document ending World War II in the Pacific.
